Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a hands-on technique developed and popularized by physical therapist John F. Barnes that uses gentle,
sustained pressure to release restrictions within the body’s fascial system, restore natural movement, and support the body’s ability to rebalance.

What is Fascia?

Fascia is a continuous web of connective tissue that surrounds and supports every muscle, joint, and organ in the body.

It runs from head to toe without interruption, connecting everything to everything else. Because of this, tension or restriction in one area can affect how the entire body moves and functions.

When fascia becomes restricted—due to injury, stress, or repetitive strain—it can create pain, tightness, and patterns of compensation throughout the body.

What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial Release works with the body’s fascial system using sustained, attentive contact rather than force.

Instead of trying to “fix” the tissue, the practitioner follows areas of restriction and allows them to release gradually. This creates lasting change by addressing the deeper patterns that are holding tension in place.

Because fascia is continuous throughout the body, releasing one area can create shifts in seemingly unrelated regions, improving overall movement and function.

How is Myofascial Release used?

Myofascial Release is used within sessions to address areas of restriction in the body’s fascial system.

Rather than being applied as a separate treatment, it is integrated into the work as needed—based on what the body is presenting in the moment. When deeper, more localized tension is present, MFR allows for direct, sustained work with the tissue without forcing change.

This helps create lasting shifts while still supporting the nervous system and overall balance of the body.

When the body needs more direct work, MFR allows it to release without force.

Myofascial Release may help with

  • Back & Hip Tension
  • Pelvic Pain
  • Neck & Shoulder Restriction
  • Jaw Pain (TMJ)
  • Persistent Pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Migraines & Headaches
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Whiplash
  • Adhesions
  • Sciatica
  • Repetitive Strain Patterns
  • Painful Scars
  • Post-surgical Restrictions
  • Restricted Movement & Tightness
  • Pregnancy & Postpartum Changes

Because of its gentle, sustained nature, this work can be safely adapted—even during pregnancy and postpartum— without force.

“The body has an innate ability to heal. Our role is to remove the restrictions that prevent it from doing so.””
